For more than two decades, Marcel Dzama (* 1974, Winnipeg) has developed a richly layered body of work characterized by a distinctive visual language that addresses political, social and ecological issues of our time.
The works conjure visionary worlds in which anthropomorphic animals, masked figures and hybrid creatures dance through jungles, flooded landscapes and moonlit skies. Despite their dreamlike atmosphere, they resonate with contemporary anxieties, shifting societal currents, and pressing ecological crises. Recurring motifs such as the chessboard, for instance, serve as metaphors for the strategic logic within political dynamics.

Dzama's practice is threaded with references to art and literature, from Goya over Polke to Duchamp, drawing on history as a means of better understanding the present – and of imagining possible futures. The poetic and often humorous tone lightens the weight of the themes he addresses, opening up imaginative space for utopia.
As part of Sigmar Polke: Athanor NOW, Marcel Dzama has created a new, Mother of Polke, work that will be presented for the first time in the monographic exhibition Into the Blue at Sies + Höke.
